“Study on the prognostic factors in patients presenting with a first episode suggestive of demyelinating disease“.
Coordinator: Mar Tintoré Subirana
Cohort study to determine the relationship between clinical, radiologica, neurophysiological and immunological data obtained at presentation and to determine the recurrence risk and reaching a significant degree of disability

“Study on the immunological and hormonal markers associated with fatigue in MS patients”.
Coordinator: Neus Téllez Lara.
Longitudinal study aiming to identify biological markers in peripheral blood related with fatigue in MS.
“Study of immunological and gene expression markers that will allow to predict clinical response to treatment with interferon beta”.
Coordinator: Manuel Comabella López.
Broad ranging study of immunological markers through flow cytometry, genetic markers through SNPs arrays, and genomic markers through gene expression microarrays in patients treated with interferon beta who classify as good or bad responders to treatment based on clinical criteria
“Study on clinical and radiological prognostic factors of response to treatment with interferon beta.“.
Coordinator: Jordi Río Izquierdo.
Cohort study to establish clincial trials outcome measures with greater clinical validity as well as clinical and radiological indicators associated to bad response to treatment
“Study on the associated genes in MS susceptability regions ”.
Coordinator: Montserrat Camiña Tato.
Contribution to the study of the genetic component of multiple sclerosis through the search of disesase-associated candidate genes.
“Study on the myeloid and lymphoid subpopulations of dendritic cells in patients with MS ”.
Coordinator: Cristina López García.
Activation and costimulation markers study of two major dendritic cell subpopulations that are found in peripheral blood, myeloid and plasmacytoid dendritic cells, in patients with different MS disease courses.
“Susceptibility study of apoptosis in cell populations that are potentially pathogenic in MS”.
Coordinator: Eva Julià Arteaga.
Study of the expression of a apoptosis mediators in the CD4+CCR5+ y CD4+CXCR3+ T cell populations in peripheral blood of MS patients with different disease courses.
“Study of the function of antioxidant proteins metallothioneins in the pathogenesis of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis and MS. Therapeutical implications ”.
Coordinator: Carmen Espejo Ruíz.
Metallothioneins (MT) are antioxidant proteins that have proven anti-inflammatory and neuroprotecting properties and MS is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the CNS. Based on these, we set forth to study the function of MT in the pathogeneisis of Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis (EAE) using MT-defficient trangenic mice. we analized the expression of MT during EAE and in MS lesions
“Therapeutics research in MS ”.
Coordinator: Xavier Montalban.
During the year 2005, our research group, Neuroimmunology, has conducted 7 clinical trials: 3 phase II, 3 phase III and 1 phase IV
“Tolerance induction in experimental allergic encephalomyelitis through gene therapy”.
Coordinator: Jordi Barquinero
Given that presentation of self-presentation of antigens in the thymus causes deletion of T-cells specific for these antigens, our objective was to induce immunological tolerance through transplantation of hematopoyetic stem cells gentically modified to express the encephalitogenic antigen used for induction of epxerimental allergic encepholomyelitis .
